Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh :- In a decisive enforcement action, authorities have destroyed foreign-origin cigarettes valued at ₹6.783 million that were seized in multiple smuggling cases in Amritsar. The confiscated consignment was disposed of in accordance with prescribed legal procedures under the supervision of a specially constituted committee comprising senior officials.
According to officials, the destruction process was carried out through a controlled incineration method, strictly adhering to government guidelines and environmental safety standards. The entire exercise was conducted with transparency and under close monitoring to ensure compliance with regulatory norms and to prevent any environmental harm.
Customs authorities stated that the illegal influx of foreign cigarettes not only results in significant revenue losses to the exchequer but also poses a serious threat to public health, particularly among young consumers. In view of these concerns, surveillance along border areas and key transit points has been intensified to curb such unlawful activities at their source.
The Amritsar Customs Commissionerate has issued a stern warning that individuals found involved in smuggling or any related illegal trade will face stringent legal action. Officials have also urged members of the public to promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities, reinforcing collective efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and safeguard both economic and public health interests.
