Sikh Youth Asked to Remove Religious Symbols at Private School Exam Centre in Hoshiarpur, Triggers Protest

National Times Bureau :- Hoshiarpur witnessed a controversy on Thursday after a Sikh youth appearing for the Senior Assistant examination at a private school was allegedly asked to remove his kirpan (siri sahib) and kara before entering the examination hall. The incident led to objections from the family and raised concerns over the treatment of Sikh religious identity even within Punjab.

According to the family, school authorities told the candidate that he would not be allowed to appear for the examination while wearing the siri sahib. When the family protested and sought clarification from the school management, they were reportedly informed that entry with the kirpan would not be permitted under any circumstances.

As the situation escalated and the family repeatedly questioned the decision, police officials reached the spot. Following their intervention, the candidate was eventually allowed to enter the examination hall with his religious symbols intact.

Speaking on the issue, the boy’s father, Harjit Singh, expressed strong resentment over the incident. He stated that if Sikh youth are subjected to such treatment even in Punjab, it raises serious questions about respect for religious freedom and identity. He demanded clarity and accountability from the authorities to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

The incident has sparked local discussion, with many questioning the lack of sensitivity shown toward constitutionally protected religious practices.
