Sikh Man Shot Dead by Los Angeles Police While Performing Gatka; Questions Raised Over Weapon Claim

Los Angeles: A 35-year-old Sikh man, Gurpreet Singh, was shot dead by police in Los Angeles while performing gatka, an ancient Sikh martial art, in the middle of a road. The incident took place in July near the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, but the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) recently released the footage.

According to police, Singh was carrying a machete and refused to comply with repeated warnings before allegedly attempting to attack officers, leading to the fatal shooting. However, community members and observers have questioned the LAPD’s account, pointing out that the object in Singh’s hand appears to be a khanda a traditional double-edged sword used in gatka demonstrations rather than a machete.

The release of the video has sparked debate within the Sikh community and beyond, raising concerns about cultural misunderstanding and the use of deadly force by police in handling such situations.
