Ludhiana (National Times): In a significant political development ahead of the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election, veteran leader Sikandar Singh Maluka has formally rejoined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), marking a powerful return that is expected to bolster the party’s presence and morale in the region.
SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal made the announcement on the social media platform X, welcoming Maluka back into the party fold.
“It gives me immense pleasure to welcome veteran Akali leader S. Sikandar Singh Maluka back to the Shiromani Akali Dal. Maluka Sahab has significantly contributed to strengthening the party under the leadership of Parkash Singh Ji Badal,” Badal wrote.
He further stated that Maluka will immediately join the campaign for the upcoming bypoll in Ludhiana West, adding fresh momentum to the party’s election machinery.
“His return will further strengthen the party… With the support of the people of Punjab, Akali Dal is growing stronger with each passing day,” Badal said. “I urge all Punjabis to come together to strengthen Punjab’s only regional party for the peace and development of the state.”
A Strategic Move
Maluka, a seasoned Akali leader and former education minister, had been away from active party politics in recent years. His return is seen as a strategic move aimed at consolidating the SAD’s core voter base, particularly among rural and senior constituents.
Party insiders believe Maluka’s comeback will not only energize the cadre in Ludhiana district, but also reaffirm SAD’s traditional leadership image, especially at a time when Punjab’s political landscape is witnessing shifting loyalties and multi-cornered contests.
Reactions and Political Implications
The development has already begun generating buzz in political circles, with SAD workers celebrating the return of a leader closely associated with Parkash Singh Badal’s legacy. Political analysts note that Maluka’s presence could sway undecided voters and strengthen SAD’s messaging on regional pride, Sikh identity, and developmental governance.
As the Ludhiana West by-election campaign intensifies, all eyes will now be on how Maluka’s re-entry shapes voter sentiment and campaign dynamics in the days ahead.
