Chandigarh, July 29 — In a major boost to the agriculture sector, Haryana’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Haryana Horticulture Department and the International Potato Center (CIP). The agreement aims to promote the production of high-quality potato seeds in the southern districts of the state.
Present at the event were Principal Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, senior officials of the Agriculture Department, and scientists from the International Potato Center.
The project is part of the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Scheme – Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), and the central government has sanctioned ₹4.48 crore for the 2025–26 fiscal year. With a total budget of ₹18.70 crore, the initiative will span four years.
Minister Shyam Singh Rana highlighted that the project will focus on developing early-generation, disease-free, high-quality potato seeds in districts like Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani, Mahendragarh, and Rewari. The goal is to empower farmers with better seed quality, increasing productivity and income, while making Haryana a hub for potato seed production.
The Potato Technology Center (PTC) in Shamgarh, Karnal, under the Horticulture Department, will serve as the project’s central implementation body. The PTC is equipped with modern infrastructure, including Aeroponics Units, ARC Technology, and Controlled Climate Systems.
Calling the MoU a “game-changer,” Rana said the project would not only ensure self-reliance in potato seed production but also enable Haryana to supply superior seeds to other states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
He further added that farmers will benefit from improved access to technology, better market connectivity, and enhanced earnings ushering in a new era for Haryana’s agricultural landscape.
