India kicked off their Champions Trophy campaign in style with a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh, powered by a brilliant century from Shubman Gill and a sensational five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami.
Shami Shines as Bangladesh Crumbles Early
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh endured a horrendous start, slipping to 35 for five as Shami and Axar Patel ripped through their top order. Shami, playing in his first ICC tournament match since his return, was lethal with the ball, not only bagging a five-wicket haul but also reaching a personal milestone—his 200th ODI wicket.
Axar Patel (2/43) also played a crucial role and could have claimed a hat-trick if Rohit Sharma hadn’t dropped Jaker Ali at first slip. Despite the shaky start, Bangladesh recovered thanks to a stunning 154-run sixth-wicket stand between Towhid Hridoy (maiden international century) and Jaker Ali (68 off 114 balls).
Hardik Pandya dropped Hridoy on 23, allowing the batter to rebuild Bangladesh’s innings before they were eventually bowled out for 228.
Gill’s Masterclass Seals Comfortable Win
In response, Shubman Gill stole the show, crafting a magnificent century to anchor India’s chase. Despite losing a few wickets along the way, India comfortably overhauled the target, starting their Champions Trophy campaign on a high note.
