Shubman Gill Surpasses Rohit Sharma, Becomes Fifth-Highest Century-Maker in WTC History

New Delhi, October 11, 2025: Team India captain Shubman Gill achieved a major milestone on Saturday, becoming the fifth player with the most centuries in World Test Championship (WTC) history, after smashing an unbeaten 129-run knock on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Gill’s fluent innings came off 196 balls, featuring 16 boundaries and two sixes, taking his WTC tally to 2,826 runs in 39 matches at an average of 43.47 and a strike rate of 61.36. With this, Gill now boasts 10 WTC centuries, surpassing former India skipper Rohit Sharma, who has nine. His highest WTC score remains 269, scored earlier this year against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.

The 26-year-old joins an elite list of players with the most WTC hundreds, alongside Joe Root (21), Steve Smith (13), Kane Williamson (11), and Marnus Labuschagne (11). He is now also the 10th-highest run-getter in the championship, behind Root, Smith, Labuschagne, Ben Stokes, and Travis Head.

Gill’s century also makes him only the second Indian captain—after Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018—to score five Test centuries in a single calendar year. He now stands among India’s finest, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Gundappa Vishwanath, Virender Sehwag, and Kohli in achieving five or more Test tons in a year.

In the match, India declared their first innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs, powered by centuries from Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The West Indies began their reply cautiously with John Campbell and Tagnarine Chanderpaul, but stumbled early when Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Campbell for 21. At Tea, West Indies were 26/1 in 11 overs, with Chanderpaul unbeaten on 13 and Alick Athanaze on 2, trailing by 492 runs.

India’s bowling attack remained disciplined, with Jasprit Bumrah (0/10), Mohammed Siraj (0/9), Jadeja (1/5), and Kuldeep Yadav (0/2) maintaining pressure on the visitors.

Gill’s stellar knock not only strengthens India’s commanding position in the Test but also firmly establishes his growing legacy as one of modern cricket’s most prolific batters in WTC history.
