Shreyas Iyer Recovering Well After Surgery in Sydney, Discharged from Hospital: BCCI

Sydney (Rajeev Sharma): Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer, who was hospitalized in Sydney after sustaining an injury during the third ODI against Australia, has been discharged and is currently stable, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.

The 30-year-old vice-captain of India’s ODI team suffered a rib and spleen injury while attempting a difficult running catch to dismiss Australian batter Alex Carey off pacer Harshit Rana’s bowling during the match on October 25.

In an official update, the BCCI confirmed that Iyer underwent a minor medical procedure to address the internal injury. “Shreyas Iyer is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in coordination with specialists in Sydney and India, is satisfied with his recovery progress. He has been discharged from the hospital and will continue follow-up consultations in Sydney,” the statement said.

Details of the Injury

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that Iyer had sustained a blunt abdominal injury, which resulted in a laceration to his spleen accompanied by internal bleeding. “The bleeding was quickly brought under control through a minor procedure, and he has received appropriate medical management since,” Saikia noted.

Expected to Miss Two Months of Play

While the cricketer’s condition has stabilized, doctors have advised rest and observation, ruling him out of action for at least the next two months. Iyer will return to India only after being declared fit to travel by his medical team.

The BCCI also extended its gratitude to the medical professionals overseeing his care. “We thank Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, and Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for their dedicated efforts in ensuring Shreyas received top-quality treatment,” Saikia added.

Support from Team and Fans

Teammates and fans have poured in messages of support on social media, wishing Iyer a speedy recovery. Known for his composure and determination on the field, the Mumbai-born batter is expected to undergo a rehabilitation program under the supervision of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) upon his return to India.

The setback is likely to keep Iyer out of India’s upcoming assignments, but team management remains optimistic about his comeback before the next international season.

For now, the focus remains on his complete recovery and gradual return to training, with BCCI assuring fans that “Shreyas is in good spirits and responding positively to treatment.”
