Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab is set to experience a noticeable change in weather conditions starting today, with the Meteorological Department forecasting rainfall activity across the state over the next two days. The change is being attributed to an active Western Disturbance over the Himalayan region, which is now extending its influence into the northern plains.
In response to the developing conditions, authorities have issued a yellow alert for dense fog and light showers, advising residents to remain cautious through the next 48 hours. Rainfall is expected to continue intermittently until January 1, potentially bringing a brief spell of winter precipitation to the region.
Visibility Drops, Transport Affected
Thick fog has already created challenging conditions across large parts of Punjab, with visibility plunging sharply in several districts. In some locations, visibility was reported to be nearly zero, significantly disrupting daily movement.
Air travel was impacted as multiple flights faced delays at Chandigarh and Amritsar airports due to poor visibility. Meteorological data showed visibility dropping to zero meters in Amritsar, Adampur, Halwara, and Pathankot. Gurdaspur and Ludhiana recorded visibility of around 10 meters, while Patiala saw levels below 20 meters. In Bathinda, visibility was reported at under 50 meters.
Rail services also experienced slow movement in fog-affected areas, adding to commuter inconvenience during the early hours.
Snowfall Brings Cheer in Himachal Pradesh
Weather conditions have also taken a wintry turn in neighboring Himachal Pradesh. Snowfall began late Tuesday evening on the higher reaches of Lahaul and Spiti, covering mountain peaks in a fresh layer of snow. The development has been welcomed by farmers, apple growers, and tourism operators, who see it as beneficial for agriculture and winter tourism.
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has indicated that snowfall activity may intensify, with the possibility of heavy snow in several parts of the state today and tomorrow.
With fog, rain, and snowfall expected to continue across northern India, residents and travelers have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and remain alert to weather-related advisories.
