SC Seeks Replies on Plea Challenging Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Under NSA

BREAKING: Supreme Court Allows 1,158 Faculty Members to Continue Until Fresh Hiring

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Superintendent of Jodhpur Central Jail to respond to a petition filed by Gitanjali Angmo, wife of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, questioning his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

The petition challenges the legality of Wangchuk’s detention and seeks his immediate release. The court has listed the matter for further hearing on October 14.

Appearing on behalf of Angmo, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that the family had not been informed of the reasons for Wangchuk’s detention. He stressed that the non-disclosure of the grounds violates fundamental legal safeguards.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, maintained that the detention order and its grounds had been served to Wangchuk. However, he added that he would look into whether his wife was also entitled to receive a copy.

The case has sparked wider debate over the use of preventive detention laws against activists. Wangchuk, known for his work on sustainable development and education in the Himalayan region, was reportedly detained amid rising tensions in Ladakh over governance and environmental concerns.

As the legal proceedings continue, the court’s notice marks an early but significant development in a case that raises broader questions about civil liberties and government accountability.
