Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Will Skip Canada’s G7 Summit

Ottawa, June 12, 2025: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has declined Canada’s invitation to attend the 51st G7 Leaders’ Summit, set for June 15–17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. A senior diplomat, speaking to Reuters, confirmed the decision without specifying reasons .

MBS, who is not a G7 member but was extended a guest invitation by Prime Minister Mark Carney, reportedly has limited international travel in recent years. He also refused last year’s G7 Summit in Italy and postponed a planned Japan visit due to King Salman’s health concerns  .

Observers suggest Mohammed bin Salman’s absence may alleviate pressure within Canada’s Liberal Party, where some MPs had opposed extending an invitation given persistent concerns over Saudi Arabia’s human rights record—a point denied by the kingdom  .

Despite MBS’s absence, other leaders—including those from Ukraine, Mexico, India, Australia, South Africa, South Korea, Brazil, and U.S. President Donald Trump—are expected to participate  .
