Row Erupts in Punjab Over Raja Warring’s Remarks on Late Buta Singh; Cheema Demands Accountability

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab’s political scene has been thrown into turmoil after state Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring allegedly made offensive remarks about late Buta Singh, a respected Dalit leader and former Union Home Minister. The comments have sparked outrage, prompting sharp criticism from Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and intervention from the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission.

Cheema strongly condemned the Congress leader’s reported comments, calling them “shameful and reflective of elitist thinking.” “Such statements expose the mindset of the Punjab Congress chief,” Cheema said in a statement. “By disrespecting Buta Singh, Raja Warring has demeaned the poor and underprivileged communities of Punjab. This arrogance shows that the Congress still operates with a Rajwadashahi attitude.”

Commission Seeks Explanation

Acting swiftly, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission took suo motu cognizance of the controversy and issued a notice to Warring. The Commission has asked him to provide a written explanation by November 6 and directed the returning officer of the Tarn Taran constituency to submit a report by November 4.

The uproar began after a video surfaced online from a bypoll rally in Tarn Taran, where Warring can allegedly be heard using derogatory language while referring to Buta Singh. The clip quickly went viral, drawing criticism from political opponents and Dalit organizations across the state.

Warring Responds Amid Backlash

Facing intense public backlash, Raja Warring moved to clarify his stance, saying that his words had been misinterpreted. “I have great respect for Buta Singh ji, who was like a father figure to me. My intention was never to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” he said.

However, his clarification has failed to calm tempers. Leaders from rival parties have accused the Congress of “hypocrisy” and “insensitivity” toward marginalized communities.

Political Repercussions

The controversy comes at a sensitive time, as political parties in Punjab gear up for the next round of local elections. Analysts say the incident could further erode the Congress’s support among Dalit voters — a crucial bloc in Punjab’s political landscape.

Buta Singh, who passed away in 2021, was a towering figure in Indian politics, having served in several key ministries and as Governor of Bihar. His legacy continues to command respect across party lines, making the current row all the more politically charged.

As the Commission’s inquiry moves forward, observers say the outcome could have lasting implications for Punjab’s political dynamics and the Congress’s image in the state.
