Rockfall Forces Closure of Popular Squamish Hiking Trail in B.C.

Squamish, B.C. (Rajeev Sharma): Authorities have closed the main trail at Stawamus Chief indefinitely following a major rockfall that covered a significant portion of the path with rocks and fallen trees.

The incident reportedly occurred around 10:40 p.m. on December 26, according to witnesses, though the closure was officially announced by B.C. Parks on December 27. Fortunately, Squamish Search and Rescue confirmed that no hikers were injured in the event.

A social media post from Squamish SAR urged the public to avoid the area entirely until officials can assess the trail for safety.

Hiker Nathan Romanin encountered the debris the following morning while on the Slhanay Peak Trail. “I realized it had to have been very recent,” he said, noting that rock steps along the trail were buried under the rubble. Romanin took photos that captured the extent of the blockage.

The Ministry of Environment and Parks stated that a detailed inspection is required before reopening the trail. In the meantime, closure signs and barricades have been put in place to prevent access.

The rockfall has also affected access to the Sea to Summit Trail via Stawamus Chief, which remains off-limits. Authorities have not provided an estimated timeline for when hikers can safely return to the trail.

Officials advise hikers and visitors to respect the closures and stay clear of the area until safety checks are complete.
