Dhaka (Rajeev Sharma): A retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife and their two children were allegedly killed inside their home in Bangladesh’s Rangpur city, with police detaining two men in connection with the case.
The victims were identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12.
The four bodies were recovered from the family’s locked house in the Daspara area of Rangpur at around 11:30 pm on Friday.
Two Cousins Detained In Rangpur Family Killing
Police have detained two cousins, identified as Mughdho and Siddhartha, over their alleged involvement in the killings.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said during a media briefing that the two suspects allegedly reached the rooftop of the Chakraborty family’s house through an adjoining building on Thursday night.
According to the police’s preliminary account, the two men had allegedly gone to the rooftop to consume yaba, a drug containing methamphetamine.
Ganapati reportedly heard noises from the rooftop and went upstairs to investigate. Police said he confronted the two men and questioned why they were there.
Police Reveal What Allegedly Happened Inside House
Investigators allege that the suspects attacked Ganapati after fearing that their presence on the rooftop would be exposed.
According to police, Ganapati was strangled with a gamchha, a thin cotton towel that he had been carrying on his shoulder.
His wife Pritilata reportedly heard the commotion and went upstairs. Police allege that she was subsequently strangled with a piece of cloth on the staircase.
The couple’s 23-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son were also killed during the incident, according to the police account.
Authorities have not immediately disclosed further details about the circumstances in which the two children were allegedly killed.
Family Had No Known Enmity, Say Police
Police said their initial investigation had not uncovered any known personal dispute or enmity involving the Chakraborty family.
The case is being investigated, while the allegations against the detained men remain subject to further police investigation and legal proceedings.
The incident has drawn attention because an entire family was found dead inside a locked residence and one of the victims was a retired schoolteacher from Bangladesh’s Hindu community.
