Shimla (National Times): Continuous monsoon rainfall has brought life to a standstill in Himachal Pradesh, with widespread disruptions, road blockages, and a rising death toll. As per official reports, 39 people have lost their lives, while 4 remain missing in various rain-related incidents across the state.
The state has been grappling with landslides and flash floods triggered by incessant downpours. The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) confirmed that 129 roads have been closed to vehicular traffic due to landslides and debris, severely impacting connectivity in multiple districts.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several regions, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue until July 5. Authorities have also warned of possible flash floods in 10 districts, including Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, Shimla, and Sirmaur, within the next 24 hours.
Rescue and relief teams have been deployed across affected regions, but adverse weather conditions are hampering operations. Local residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and follow updates from district administrations.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has reviewed the situation and directed all departments to remain on high alert. Emergency control rooms have been activated, and arrangements are underway to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to stranded tourists and locals.
Schools in several districts have been ordered shut until further notice. Meanwhile, the administration has appealed to pilgrims and travelers heading to high-altitude areas to postpone their plans until weather conditions improve.
With more rain on the horizon and the monsoon season just beginning, the state faces a tense and challenging week ahead.
