National Times Bureau :- A major breakthrough has been made in the Red Fort car explosion case, with forensic tests confirming that the unidentified body recovered from the Hyundai i20 car belonged to Dr. Umar Muhammad, the suspected suicide bomber. DNA samples taken from the remains matched 100 percent with those of his mother, officials at AIIMS Forensic Department revealed. The official report, however, is still awaited.
Investigators said Dr. Umar Muhammad’s body was severely damaged in the explosion, making identification difficult at first. Remnants of his body were found charred inside the vehicle. DNA profiling was carried out using samples from his mother and brother, which conclusively confirmed his identity.
So far, 12 people have died in the powerful blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10. Nine victims were identified earlier, and with the confirmation of Umar Muhammad’s identity, the number of identified deceased has risen to ten. Forensic teams have also recovered body parts of two other victims, whose identities can only be confirmed after DNA testing.
CCTV footage examined by the investigation agencies revealed that the Hyundai i20 was parked near the Red Fort around three hours before the explosion, with Dr. Umar seen inside. Authorities believe he was inside the car when the blast occurred, possibly executing a pre-planned act of terror.
