Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): A widening corruption investigation led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has sent shockwaves through Calgary City Hall, after search warrants were executed at the homes of multiple high-profile political figures, including former mayor Jyoti Gondek.
Authorities confirmed that warrants were carried out at the residences of Gondek, former Ward 4 councillor Sean Chu, and current Ward 10 councillor Andre Chabot as part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption. All three individuals have stated they are fully cooperating with investigators. Gondek confirmed that police attended her home with a warrant and seized her cellphone. In a public statement, she emphasized her cooperation while raising concerns about the intrusive nature of the search. “I have been fully co-operative and respect the legal process,” she said, adding that the situation has been “very invasive” and that she and her lawyer will review whether the warrant was justified.

The case originated when the Calgary Police Service received a complaint in October 2025 and subsequently referred the matter to the RCMP for further investigation. Since then, federal investigators have taken over the file, executing search warrants and gathering evidence. Councillor Andre Chabot described the search of his home as unexpected, stating he has not been informed about the specific nature of the investigation. He confirmed that police requested access to his electronic devices, which he voluntarily provided. Chabot maintained that he is cooperating fully and does not believe he is personally under investigation. His lawyer reiterated that position, stating he has nothing to hide.
“I was asked to provide my devices for them to look at to gather evidence. That’s about as much as I know,” Chabot said, adding that he would have handed over his phone without the need for a warrant had he been asked.
Meanwhile, legal counsel for Sean Chu confirmed that no charges have been laid against his client. His lawyer, Shamsher Kothari, stated that Chu has been cooperative throughout the process and respects the legal system, expressing hope for a swift conclusion to the investigation. The probe is believed to be linked to potential corruption involving political figures and possibly external entities, though officials have not released detailed information. Authorities have cited confidentiality as necessary to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Current Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas acknowledged awareness of the situation but stated he has not been contacted by investigators. He declined further comment given the active nature of the case. At this stage, no criminal charges have been laid, and the investigation remains ongoing. However, the execution of warrants at the homes of prominent political figures marks a significant escalation, raising serious questions about governance, transparency, and accountability in Calgary’s municipal leadership.
More developments are expected as the RCMP continues its investigation
