Raminder Singh Awla Joins SAD: Political Boost for Sukhbir Badal or a New Challenge Ahead of 2027 Punjab Polls?

Jalalabad (Gurpreet Singh): The entry of senior Congress leader and former Jalalabad MLA Raminder Singh Awla into the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has opened a fresh chapter in Punjab’s political calculations ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal welcomed Awla into the party, but the move also raises questions about the party’s candidate strategy in Jalalabad, a constituency closely associated with Badal’s political career.

In a public message, Sukhbir Badal described Awla’s induction as a pleasure, signalling the Akali Dal’s willingness to bring experienced political figures into its ranks as it prepares for the next electoral contest.

Jalalabad: The key question

Awla’s arrival could strengthen SAD’s local presence, particularly if his political network and support base help the party reconnect with voters. His experience as a former MLA may also prove useful as the Akali Dal looks to rebuild its position across Punjab.

However, Jalalabad presents a potentially delicate question. The constituency has long been a major political stronghold for Sukhbir Badal, making the issue of who could represent SAD there in 2027 particularly significant.

Will Badal contest from Jalalabad again, or could Awla’s induction point towards a different arrangement? At this stage, the party has not announced its candidate for the constituency. Any suggestion of an internal contest would therefore be premature, but the decision could become an important part of SAD’s election planning.

Can SAD regain its political ground?

Beyond Jalalabad, the larger question is whether the Akali Dal can regain voters’ confidence in Punjab. The party faces the challenge of rebuilding its political standing, strengthening its organisation and convincing voters that it can once again play a leading role in the state.

Bringing in established leaders such as Awla may help expand its political reach, but an individual induction alone cannot guarantee an electoral revival. The party’s prospects will also depend on its public image, local leadership, campaign strategy and ability to address voters’ concerns.

A strategic gain, but questions remain

Awla’s move could give SAD an opportunity to consolidate support in the Jalalabad region. At the same time, the constituency’s importance to Sukhbir Badal means that candidate selection will attract attention as the election approaches.

For now, Awla’s induction represents a political development rather than a clear indication of the party’s electoral fortunes. Whether it becomes a meaningful boost or creates fresh challenges will depend on how SAD manages its local leadership and broader preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
