Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced industrialist Rajinder Gupta as its nominee for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Punjab, confirming days of speculation about his possible entry into national politics.
Gupta, a leading entrepreneur and founder of the Trident Group, has been a well-known figure in Punjab’s business and development circles. His nomination comes after he stepped down from key advisory posts in the state government, including the vice-chairmanship of the Economic Policy and Planning Board. He also resigned as chairperson of the advisory committee of the Kali Devi temple in Patiala, hinting at a shift toward an active political role.
The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after AAP MP Sanjeev Arora resigned following his election to the Punjab Legislative Assembly earlier this year. The bypoll for the seat is scheduled to take place on October 24.
Given AAP’s commanding strength in the state assembly, Gupta’s election to the Upper House is largely seen as a formality. His nomination underscores the party’s strategy of integrating individuals from non-political backgrounds — particularly those with industry experience — into legislative positions.
Party sources say Gupta’s track record in economic development and public policy advisory roles made him a strong contender. If elected, he is expected to contribute significantly to AAP’s national agenda, particularly in areas related to economic planning and industrial growth.
The official nomination papers are expected to be filed in the coming days.
