New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s unexpected demonstration outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence has added a fresh political dimension to the ongoing nationwide protests over the alleged NEET paper leak. The move has also fuelled speculation over whether the Congress is attempting to emerge as the principal political face of the student agitation, which has largely been driven by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
On July 21, Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior party leaders marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence and staged a sit-in demanding accountability over the police action against student protesters. Security personnel later detained the leaders and cleared the protest site.
Congress Changes Course After Maintaining Distance
The Congress had initially maintained a cautious distance from the CJP-led protests, which began at Jantar Mantar on June 20. While leaders from several opposition parties visited the protest venue, the Congress refrained from officially associating itself with the movement during its early stages.
Political observers believe the party was reluctant to allow another organisation to dominate an issue—such as examination irregularities—that it has consistently raised against the Centre.
The first indication of a shift came days before Parliament’s Monsoon Session when Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Khera met activist Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar. However, the party’s response became significantly more aggressive only after police action against students during the “Sansad Chalo” march.
Police Action Triggers Strong Political Response
Following reports of lathi-charge and the detention of protesters, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi publicly criticised the government, accusing it of suppressing students instead of addressing their concerns.
Rahul alleged that the Centre had failed to act against those responsible for the alleged examination leak while resorting to force against young protesters. The Congress leaders also visited injured students before launching their surprise protest near the Prime Minister’s residence.
Secret Planning Behind the Protest
According to party sources, the demonstration was organised with minimal publicity. Senior Congress leaders reportedly gathered at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence before walking towards the Prime Minister’s house, catching both security agencies and the media by surprise.
As the protest gathered momentum, additional Congress leaders joined the sit-in. Union Minister Jitendra Singh reportedly attempted to engage with Rahul Gandhi on behalf of the government, but no consensus emerged. Police later intervened and removed the protesters from the area.
Political Messaging Beyond the Education Ministry
Unlike the CJP, whose demands have primarily focused on action against the alleged paper leak and accountability within the Education Ministry, Rahul Gandhi expanded the political narrative by demanding responsibility from the country’s highest leadership.
The Congress has argued that the issue extends beyond examination irregularities and reflects a larger failure of governance. Party leaders have maintained that the government must answer for both the alleged leak and the treatment meted out to protesting students.
Questions Over the Future of the Movement
Rahul Gandhi’s intervention has prompted discussion over its possible impact on the student-led campaign. Some political analysts believe the Congress has succeeded in elevating the issue to the national political stage, while others argue the party is seeking to reclaim leadership of an issue that had increasingly become associated with the CJP.
Experts also point out that the CJP’s long-term future remains uncertain, with questions continuing over its organisational structure and political ambitions. While the movement has attracted significant public attention, its ability to sustain momentum may depend on whether it evolves into a broader political platform or remains a campaign focused on education-related issues.
With Parliament in session and student protests continuing across the country, the confrontation has intensified the political battle over the alleged examination scandal and ensured that the issue remains firmly at the centre of the national debate.
