Pune, July 11, 2025: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday pleaded not guilty in a defamation case related to his remarks against Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The plea was entered through his lawyer Milind Pawar before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) and Special Judge for MP/MLA cases, Amol Sriram Shinde, during proceedings at the Pune court. The case was filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of V D Savarkar.
The court formally read out the charges, to which Gandhi responded via his counsel with a plea of not guilty. Rahul Gandhi was not present in court at the time of the hearing.
Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, representing the complainant Satyaki Savarkar, informed reporters that the process of recording the accused’s plea has been completed, and the trial will now move forward.
The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for July 24.
