National Times Bureau :- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met the grieving family of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide on October 7. Rahul Gandhi arrived in Sector 24, Chandigarh, around 11.08 am, shortly after landing at the airport, to offer condolences to the officer’s family.
He was accompanied by former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Rao Narender Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda, and Congress MLA Varun Chaudhary.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit comes amid mounting political pressure on the Haryana government, as opposition parties intensify their attack over the circumstances surrounding the senior officer’s death.
The deceased, a 2001-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, allegedly shot himself at his residence. In an eight-page note purportedly written before his death, the 52-year-old officer accused eight senior IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and now-transferred Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, of caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation, and atrocities.
Following the incident, Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, demanded that both Kapur and Bijarniya be named in the FIR for abetment to suicide. The family has also called for their arrest and has refused to allow the postmortem and cremation until these demands are met.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with several political leaders from different parties visiting the family to extend condolences and express solidarity.
