New Delhi, May 4, 2025: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he is ready to take moral responsibility for the mistakes committed by his party, even those made before his political career began, including the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. During an interaction in Hyderabad, when asked about the riots, Gandhi responded that while he was not involved in politics at the time, he does not believe in evading accountability.
“I wasn’t there when many of those mistakes happened, but I am ready to take responsibility,” Gandhi said. He emphasized the importance of a political leader standing by the actions of their party, rather than distancing themselves from uncomfortable chapters in its history.
His comments came as part of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which he has used as a platform to address contentious issues, while also framing a new direction for the Congress party. The 1984 riots, which followed the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, remain a deeply sensitive topic, especially for the Sikh community.
By openly addressing the issue, Gandhi positioned himself as a leader seeking to confront the past and move towards reconciliation and justice.
