National Times Bureau :- A day after senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found dead in an apparent case of suicide, serious questions have surfaced over the circumstances leading to his death and the inclusion of his name in an FIR lodged in Rohtak. Kumar, a 2001-batch officer serving as Inspector General (IG) of Rohtak Range, was reportedly named in a bribery case without prior approval from the state government, sources close to his family said.
According to officials, the Rohtak police had registered an FIR on Monday following a complaint from a local liquor contractor. The complainant alleged that one Sushil, said to be close to Kumar, had demanded Rs 2.5 lakh as a bribe in the IG’s name. The contractor is reported to have submitted CCTV footage and audio recordings as supporting evidence.
Sushil was arrested soon after the FIR was filed and presented before a local court. However, the inclusion of the senior IPS officer’s name in the same case has sparked debate and outrage among his colleagues and family members. Sources claimed that Kumar’s death was not a case of suicide but the result of immense pressure and distress caused by the allegations.
Meanwhile, the officer’s wife, Amneet P Kumar, a 2001-batch IAS officer currently serving as Commissioner and Secretary in the Foreign Cooperation Department, is returning from Japan. She was part of an official delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
