Punjab’s Drug Crackdown Enters 113th Day, Over 18,700 Smugglers Arrested So Far

Chandigarh, June 22, 2025 — In its unrelenting war against drugs, the Punjab Police on Sunday arrested 151 drug smugglers across the state as the massive crackdown campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh” entered its 113th day. The latest state-wide operation yielded 533 grams of heroin, 2.8 kilograms of opium, and ₹5.32 lakh in drug-related cash.

With these arrests, the total number of drug smugglers apprehended since the launch of the campaign has surged to 18,719 a striking figure that underscores the intensity of the anti-drug push under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

The coordinated operation was conducted across all 28 police districts on the directions of Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.

According to Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, more than 200 police teams comprising over 1,500 personnel and supervised by 99 gazetted officers raided 523 locations throughout the day. These efforts led to the registration of 98 FIRs and the questioning of 502 suspicious individuals.

The crackdown is part of the Mann government’s broader mission to rid Punjab of drugs. A dedicated five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, is overseeing the campaign’s execution and outcomes.

Alongside enforcement, the government is also focusing on rehabilitation and prevention. As part of the de-addiction drive, 54 individuals were persuaded by the police to begin rehabilitation treatment on Sunday alone.

The state continues to implement a three-pronged EDP strategy — Enforcement, Deaddiction, and Prevention — to tackle the drug menace from all sides, reaffirming the administration’s resolve to build a drug-free Punjab.
