Punjab Weather Forecast: Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain Across Northern Districts as Monsoon Activity Persists

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Rainfall activity is expected to continue across Punjab on Saturday, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert warning of heavy downpours and thunderstorms for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar. Authorities have advised residents in these northern and sub-mountainous regions to stay vigilant regarding shifting weather patterns, although widespread intense precipitation across the entire state is not anticipated.

According to meteorological projections, wet conditions on Saturday will be concentrated primarily in the northern sector, with rain likely to affect 50 to 75 percent of areas in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, and Rupnagar. Central and south-eastern districts—including Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ludhiana, and Patiala—are forecast to receive showers across 25 to 50 percent of their territory, while the southern Malwa belt will mainly see isolated and brief spells of rain.

Precipitation is scheduled to decline noticeably beginning Sunday, August 23, with weather warnings lifted across the state. While moderate rain may still occur at 50 to 75 percent of locations in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar, coverage in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Sangrur will drop to between 25 and 50 percent, alongside scattered activity across Malwa.

By Monday, August 24, monsoon showers will recede further, limiting sporadic rain strictly to Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, and Mohali, as central and southwestern areas such as Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Patiala experience dry conditions. The weather across Punjab is set to remain mostly clear and dry by Tuesday, August 25, with only isolated light drizzle possible in a few northern and eastern districts.
