Punjab Vidhan Sabha Special Session Extended Till July 15 Amid Political Ruckus

Punjab Cabinet Meeting Held After Long Gap, Special Vidhan Sabha Session Scheduled for Feb 24-25

Chandigarh (National Times): The ongoing two-day special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, which commenced on July 10, has now been officially extended till July 15, 2025. The extension comes amid significant opposition and criticism over the purpose and planning of the session, with questions raised about its urgency and utility.

Originally slated for just two days, the special session drew flak from opposition leaders who alleged that the government was misusing legislative time and resources, especially when one of the two days, July 10, was solely dedicated to obituary references. Critics called it a “mere formality” and “an eyewash” that failed to address pressing public issues.

Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa condemned the scheduling, stating, “Calling a special session primarily for condolence messages is not what the people of Punjab expect from their elected representatives. The state is grappling with major issues like drug menace, unemployment, and deteriorating law and order, none of which were addressed.”

The extended session will now see deliberation on critical issues and bills that require the Assembly’s attention, the finance minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, said.

As the extended session resumes, all eyes will be on the government to see whether it takes up substantial matters or if the opposition continues to boycott or disrupt proceedings in protest.
