Chandigarh, March 16, 2025 – Punjab Police is set to bring back seven key aides of Amritpal Singh from Dibrugarh Jail in Assam to face trial in the Ajnala Police Station attack case, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed on Sunday. The seven men, detained under the National Security Act (NSA) for the past two years, will face formal arrest upon their return to Punjab.
Identities of the Detainees Revealed
The seven individuals have been identified as:
Basant Singh of Daulatpura Ucha in Moga
Bhagwant Singh (alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke) of village Bajeke in Moga
Gurmeet Singh Gill (alias Gurmeet Bukkanwala) of village Bukkanwala in Moga
Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi (alias Daljeet Singh Kalsi) of West Punjabi Bagh in New Delhi
Gurinderpal Singh Aujla (alias Guri Aujla) of Phagwara
Harjeet Singh (alias Chacha) of village Jallupur Khera in Amritsar
Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal of Rauke Kalan in Moga
High-Level Police Team to Handle the Transfer
A strong police team, led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Harinder Singh Gill, is stationed at Dibrugarh Jail to oversee the formal arrest and transfer process. Once their NSA detention period ends, the detainees will be presented before a court in Dibrugarh to secure transit remand before their return to Punjab for trial.
Background of the Ajnala Police Station Attack
On February 23, 2023, Amritpal Singh and his supporters stormed the Ajnala Police Station using the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a shield to demand the release of their associate, Lovepreet Singh (alias Toofan). The next day, Amritsar Rural Police registered FIR No. 39 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:
307 – Attempt to murder
353 – Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty
332 – Voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty
333 – Grievous hurt to deter a public servant from duty
506 – Criminal intimidation
120-B – Criminal conspiracy
148 – Rioting, armed with a deadly weapon
149 – Unlawful assembly
Formal Arrest and Trial to Follow
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Border Range Satinder Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Maninder Singh stated that the seven detainees will be formally arrested upon their return. Their trial in connection with the Ajnala attack case will commence soon after.
The move is part of Punjab Police’s broader effort to crack down on extremist activities and ensure that those involved face the full force of the law.
