Punjab Police Arrests 116 Drug Smugglers in Massive Statewide Crackdown on Day 155 of Anti-Drug Campaign

National Times Bureau, Aug 3: In a sweeping statewide operation on Sunday, Punjab Police arrested 116 drug smugglers and registered 75 FIRs during raids conducted at 399 locations across the state. This action marked the 155th consecutive day of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nashian Virudh, aimed at eliminating drug abuse and trafficking from Punjab.

The raids, carried out under the direct supervision of Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, led to significant seizures including 1.7 kg of heroin, 1 kg of opium, 298 kg of poppy husk, over 37,000 intoxicant tablets and capsules, and ₹11.88 lakh in drug-related cash.

With Sunday’s arrests, the total number of drug smugglers apprehended since the campaign began has risen to an unprecedented 24,499. The operation involved over 180 police teams and 1,300 personnel, including 77 gazetted officers, who also interrogated 433 suspicious individuals during the day-long crackdown.

The campaign operates on a three-pronged strategy—Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP). In line with the de-addiction goal, police motivated 90 individuals to begin rehabilitation treatment on Sunday alone.

The state government has also formed a 5-member Cabinet Sub-Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to oversee the anti-drug drive. Chief Minister Mann has instructed senior district officials to intensify efforts, ensuring that Punjab becomes a drug-free state.
