Punjab Police Arrest Goldy Brar’s Parents in Fresh Extortion Probe

Punjab Police have taken into custody the parents of fugitive gangster Satinderjit Singh, alias Goldy Brar, in connection with an extortion case registered last year in Muktsar district, officials confirmed on Monday. The development comes as part of an intensified statewide drive aimed at breaking the influence and logistical backing of organised crime groups.

Police sources said the arrests stem from a 2024 complaint lodged by a resident of Udekaran village, who alleged intimidation and extortion. After months of investigation, a team from Sadar Muktsar police station traced the accused and detained them from Amritsar.

The accused have been identified as Shamsher Singh and Preetpal Kaur, currently living in Adesh Nagar along the Kotkapura Road in Muktsar. The family originally belongs to Faridkot district. Officials said both were produced before the authorities after their arrest and further legal proceedings are underway.

Shamsher Singh is a former police official who served as an Assistant Sub-Inspector before being compulsorily retired in 2021. His removal from service followed his alleged involvement in a murder case that was investigated in Muktsar district, according to police records.

Goldy Brar, their son, continues to evade Indian agencies and has been declared a proclaimed offender. He is a key accused in the 2022 murder of popular Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, known to fans as Sidhu Moosewala, a case that sent shockwaves across the state and beyond.

Investigative agencies believe Brar has been operating from overseas for several years. A public alert issued in 2024 indicated that he may be based in either Canada or the United States. Reports suggest he left India in 2017 on a student visa to Canada, where he later became involved in transnational criminal activities.

Brar was earlier associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang but is believed to have parted ways with the group last year following internal differences. In another major step, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs designated him an “individual terrorist” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2024.

Senior police officials said the arrest of Brar’s parents reflects a deliberate strategy to dismantle criminal ecosystems by targeting not just gang leaders but also their alleged facilitators, as Punjab steps up efforts to curb organised crime and extortion rackets across the state.
