Chandigarh, July 18, 2025 — As Punjab’s ongoing anti-drug campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh” marked its 139th day, police across the state arrested 125 drug smugglers on Friday and seized a significant haul of narcotics. The operation led to the recovery of 8.6 kg of heroin, 500 grams of opium, 151 kg of poppy husk, and ₹11,980 in drug money.
The total number of drug smugglers arrested since the campaign began has now reached 22,533. The state-wide operation was launched under the directive of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, with the objective of eliminating the drug menace from Punjab.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav oversaw the coordinated crackdown across all 28 police districts. Chief Minister Mann had earlier instructed Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police to intensify efforts to make Punjab a drug-free state.
To further reinforce the drive, the state government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, headed by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor the progress of the campaign.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla stated that more than 180 police teams, comprising over 1,300 personnel and supervised by 81 gazetted officers, conducted raids at 423 locations. These efforts resulted in the registration of 81 FIRs.
During the operation, police checked 493 suspicious individuals. As part of a broader strategy combining Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP), the Punjab Police also convinced 83 individuals to voluntarily seek de-addiction and rehabilitation services.
