Punjab Launches AI-Powered Screening for Cancer and Eye Care, Targets Hundreds Daily

Chandigarh, September 23, 2025: In a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening preventive healthcare, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh on Tuesday launched first-of-its-kind AI-enabled screening devices for early detection of breast cancer, cervical cancer, and vision impairment. The initiative, backed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is implemented in collaboration with ACT Grants and will cover eight districts of Punjab.

The portable, radiation-free AI devices include Thermalytix by Niramai for breast cancer screening, Smart Scope by Periwinkle for cervical cancer detection, and a Portable Autorefractometer by Forus Health for eye check-ups. The launch event featured live demonstrations of all devices, highlighting their non-invasive and highly accurate screening capabilities.

Describing the initiative as a historic step toward equitable healthcare, Dr Balbir Singh said, “Prevention and early detection are the cornerstones of effective healthcare. With these advanced devices, we are taking screening to the doorsteps of our communities, especially in rural areas, overcoming barriers of fear, cost, and accessibility. This initiative will not only save lives but also position Punjab as a leader in AI-driven public health innovation.”

Citing data from the ICMR National Cancer Registry Programme, Dr Singh highlighted that Punjab recorded 42,288 new cancer cases in 2024, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. NFHS-5 statistics revealed that only 0.3% of women aged 30–49 have ever been screened for breast cancer, and 2.4% for cervical cancer. “We are determined to reverse these trends and set a national example,” he affirmed.

The state aims to conduct at least 600 eye check-ups and 300 cancer screenings daily using these AI devices, significantly improving early detection rates and easing the burden on tertiary healthcare facilities.

The Health Minister also appealed for support to the ‘Mission Chardi Kala Fund’, a campaign launched by CM Mann to assist flood-affected families. Senior health officials, including members of the Punjab Development Commission, Mission Director NHM Punjab, and representatives from partnering organizations, attended the event along with healthcare professionals and community workers.
