Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Counting for Punjab’s rural local government elections began on Tuesday, marking a crucial day for political parties vying for influence ahead of the next Assembly contest. Election staff started tallying ballot papers for 347 Zila Parishad positions and 2,838 Panchayat Samiti seats at 154 counting centres located in 141 venues across the state.

Officials from the State Election Commission cautioned that results would not be immediate, as the elections were conducted using traditional paper ballots rather than electronic machines. Due to the volume of votes and the manual nature of the process, the final outcome is expected to emerge late in the evening.

The exercise will decide the political future of more than 9,000 candidates who contested the polls held on Sunday. With all major parties fielding nominees under their official symbols, the elections have taken on added significance as a test of strength at the village and block levels.

Even as counting commenced, the atmosphere remained tense. Opposition parties raised concerns about access to counting centres, alleging that some of their polling representatives were being stopped or delayed. In parts of Patiala, Shiromani Akali Dal leaders claimed their agents faced obstruction while attempting to reach designated locations. Election authorities said they were monitoring the situation.

The local body elections were conducted amid heightened political activity, with the Punjab Assembly elections less than a year and a half away. Analysts believe the results will offer early signals of voter sentiment and organisational reach, shaping campaign strategies for the larger electoral battle ahead.

As counting continues through multiple rounds, parties are keeping a close watch on emerging trends, with the final numbers expected to have a strong bearing on Punjab’s evolving political landscape.
