National Times Bureau :- In a major move to strengthen healthcare in border districts, the Punjab government has announced an additional monthly incentive of ₹40,000 for specialist doctors posted in these areas. This amount will be paid over and above their regular salary, starting immediately.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said that the decision aims to ensure better access to quality medical services for people living in remote border areas. To make this even more effective, doctors will now be allowed to opt for border area postings voluntarily.
What Prompted This Move?
Historically, doctors have been reluctant to serve in border districts, often citing lack of facilities and difficult living conditions. As a result, many request early transfers, leaving hospitals in these regions understaffed. This leads to a gap in essential healthcare services for local residents.
To address this, the state government has decided to offer this financial incentive so that more doctors are motivated to stay and serve in these areas.
Doctors’ Association Backed the Plan
According to sources, the Specialist Doctors’ Association had earlier proposed that if the government offered an additional allowance, they would willingly serve longer in such postings. Taking their demand into account, the government approved this proposal to help both the healthcare system and the professionals who run it.
Who Will Benefit?
This scheme will directly benefit specialist doctors posted in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Batala, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Fazilka, and Jalalabad. These districts often face challenges in retaining highly qualified medical staff.
With the new incentive in place, the government expects better retention, improved patient care, and overall stronger health infrastructure in these areas.
Minister’s Statement
“This incentive is not just about money. It’s about valuing the hard work and commitment of our doctors,” said Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh. “Our goal is to ensure that even the most remote parts of Punjab have access to top-quality healthcare.”
