Chandigarh, February 28 – The Punjab government has gone into action mode against drug trafficking, ramping up its efforts to eradicate the menace. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a crucial meeting today with all district commissioners (DCs) and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) to discuss further steps.
New Strategy to Wipe Out Drug Trade
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has unveiled a fresh blueprint to tackle drug abuse in the state. Punjab minister Aman Arora, after a high-level meeting, announced that the journey toward restoring “Rangla Punjab” has officially begun. The meeting was attended by ministers Harpal Singh Cheema, Laljit Bhullar, and Dr. Balbir Singh.
Following the meeting, Aman Arora and Harpal Singh Cheema held a press conference to outline the government’s war on drugs.
‘War Against Drugs’ Campaign
Arora revealed that the government has formed a “War Against Drugs” Committee, which has already led to the arrest of over 6,500 drug traffickers in the past three years. Many of these belong to organized drug cartels. Additionally, the government has seized assets worth ₹612 crore from these networks. So far, over 30,000 cases related to drug smuggling have been registered.
Political and Police Nexus Under Scrutiny
Arora also claimed that several political leaders and police officials have been complicit in the drug trade. To break this nexus, the AAP government has transferred over 10,000 police personnel in a sweeping overhaul aimed at eliminating internal corruption linked to narcotics.
Clear Warning: Quit Drugs or Quit Punjab
Harpal Singh Cheema, the chairman of the anti-drug committee, issued a stern warning to drug peddlers: “Either quit the drug trade or leave Punjab, or be ready to face severe consequences.” He asserted that Punjab will no longer tolerate drug smuggling and that the government is committed to ensuring a drug-free state.
