Punjab Government Bus Services to Halt for 3 Days Amid Employee Protest

Chandigarh (National Times): In a move likely to cause major disruption across Punjab, government-run bus services under PRTC and PUNBUS will remain completely suspended for three days, from July 9 to 11, as employees prepare for a statewide protest.

The strike, announced by contract-based workers, is a response to the Punjab government’s failure to fulfill promises made last month regarding the regularization of their employment. Despite a public assurance by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, employees say there has been no meaningful progress.

Their primary concern centers on the expansion of the contract system within the transport department. Workers fear that this system threatens their job security and long-term livelihood. “If contractual hiring continues, we could be replaced at any time. This fight is about job stability and dignity,” a union spokesperson said.

The strike is expected to paralyze daily transportation for thousands of commuters, including students, office-goers, and interstate travelers. With no concrete backup plan announced, citizens are being urged to make alternative arrangements for travel during the protest days.

Union leaders have also warned that this is just the beginning. If their demands are not addressed, further escalations — including road blockades and protests outside key government offices, may follow.

As the standoff intensifies, all eyes are on the Punjab government for a resolution that balances worker rights with public convenience.
