Punjab Government Announces Free Treatment for Thalassemia Patients, Including Costly Bone Marrow Transplants

National Times Bureau :- The Punjab government has taken a significant step to support children suffering from thalassemia by announcing free treatment for these patients across the state. The government will bear the entire cost of bone marrow transplants (BMT), amounting to ₹10 lakh per procedure.

Patients can apply directly through a dedicated portal, as the government has signed an agreement with a company based at CMC Ludhiana to facilitate this treatment. Punjab currently has over a thousand thalassemia patients, with 24 treatment centers established throughout the state.

Health officials have clarified that there will be no adverse effects on the donor’s body following the bone marrow transplant. Previously, thalassemia patients required frequent blood transfusions, but with this initiative, the need for repeated transfusions will be eliminated. Authorities believe this move will bring relief to hundreds of affected families.
