Punjab Faces Intense Heat Spell as IMD Warns of Heatwave; Thunderstorms Expected to Bring Relief Later This Week

Post-Monsoon Heatwave Grips Punjab: Temperatures Climb, Dry Spell Continues

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Large parts of Punjab and the Chandigarh region remain under the grip of severe heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert for heatwave conditions across multiple districts. While soaring temperatures continue to affect normal life, weather officials expect a significant shift from June 11 as a fresh western disturbance is likely to trigger rain and thunderstorms.

The latest weather data shows a steady rise in temperatures across the state, with Bathinda recording a scorching 46.8 degrees Celsius — the highest maximum temperature reported this month. Most districts witnessed temperatures well above seasonal norms, reflecting the strengthening heatwave conditions.

The IMD has identified districts including Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Sangrur, Moga, Fazilka, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib and Ferozepur as the most vulnerable to heatwave conditions. Residents have been advised to remain hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during afternoon hours.

Meteorologists say the present dry spell is likely to end soon with the approach of a western disturbance over northwest India. Beginning June 11, several districts are expected to experience thunderstorms, gusty winds and scattered rainfall, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50 to 60 kilometres per hour. Isolated hailstorms are also forecast in a few regions.

Officials noted that although pre-monsoon activity will increase, the southwest monsoon has not yet entered Punjab. Current estimates suggest its arrival toward the end of June, depending on atmospheric conditions over northern India.

Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, said the incoming weather system is expected to reduce temperatures after two days of extreme heat. The department has also issued alerts for lightning and storm activity in several districts to ensure public preparedness.

On June 11, districts including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar and Mohali are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, while other parts of the state may experience a combination of heatwave conditions and isolated showers.

The unstable weather pattern is expected to continue through June 12 and June 13, bringing widespread rainfall to many areas and providing long-awaited respite from the intense summer conditions that have gripped Punjab over the past several days.
