Punjab Declares Gazetted Holiday on Shaheed Udham Singh’s Martyrdom Day; Road Renamed in His Honour

Chandigarh, July 29, 2025: The Punjab Government has officially declared July 31 as a gazetted holiday to mark the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh. The announcement, made by AAP State President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, fulfils a long-standing demand of the Kamboj community and aims to honour the legacy of the iconic revolutionary who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in London.

At a press conference held at Punjab Bhawan, Aman Arora also revealed that the Bhawanigarh–Sunam–Bhikhi–Kotshamir road will be renamed as “Shaheed Udham Singh Marg.” This renaming is part of the state’s tribute to the freedom fighter and will be formally inaugurated at a state-level event in Sunam Udham Singh’s birthplace on July 31. AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will preside over the ceremony and officially unveil the new road name.

Arora expressed heartfelt thanks to Kejriwal and Mann for taking decisive steps to celebrate the spirit and sacrifice of Shaheed Udham Singh. He emphasized that such efforts not only honour Punjab’s martyrs but also preserve their place in the national memory.

Pushing for further recognition, Arora urged the central government to rename the Patiala–Bhawanigarh road after Shaheed Udham Singh as well. He mentioned that the matter is being followed up at the Union level by Chief Minister Mann to ensure a fitting tribute at the national scale.

Voicing their appreciation, Jalalabad MLA Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy and Punjab State BC Commission Chairman Dr. Malkiat Singh Thind commended both the state leadership and Aman Arora for fulfilling the Kamboj community’s longstanding demands. They highlighted that these steps not only celebrate the martyr’s life but also uphold Punjab’s proud legacy of revolutionary resistance.
