Punjab CM to Hold Landmark ‘Sarkar-Kisan Milni’ on April 12 to Promote Water-Saving Farming

Chandigarh, April 11, 2025: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will meet directly with farmers at the ‘Sarkar-Kisan Milni’ on April 12 at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, to push for sustainable agricultural reforms and address groundwater concerns.

The dialogue aims to curb the state’s rapidly depleting water table by urging farmers to adopt low water-consuming, high-yielding paddy varieties and modern sowing techniques. More than 1,100 farmers are expected to take part in this major outreach effort.

Key discussions will revolve around the promotion of paddy varieties developed and approved by PAU that use significantly less water. Farmers will also be briefed on alternative transplanting methods that reduce water dependence.

In a strategic shift, the state government is set to begin the paddy sowing season from June 1 this year. Officials say the change is intended to avoid excess moisture issues during procurement season in October. To implement the new schedule, Punjab has been divided into cultivation zones, and a phased sowing calendar will be rolled out soon.

Agricultural experts and scientists will be on hand during the Milni to guide farmers and address their questions directly. The initiative reflects Punjab’s growing push for climate-resilient farming and marks a step toward aligning traditional agriculture with sustainable practices.
