Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Pays Obeisance at Golden Temple, Reviews Security Amid Threats

Amritsar (National Times): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann paid obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar today, amid heightened security following a spate of threatening emails sent to the shrine and the city’s international airport.

This marks the Chief Minister’s first visit to the Golden Temple since the threats surfaced on July 14, sparking concern among devotees and drawing criticism from opposition parties over the government’s perceived delay in addressing the matter.

Clad in traditional attire, Mann offered prayers at the sacred site and also reviewed the multi-layered security arrangements deployed around the temple complex. Senior police officials briefed him on surveillance upgrades, deployment of additional personnel, and coordination with central agencies.

Speaking to reporters after his visit, the Chief Minister assured the public that those behind the threats will not be spared.
“The investigation is currently underway. We are actively working to trace the origin of these emails and bring the culprits to justice. Anyone trying to disturb peace in Punjab will be dealt with strictly,” Mann said.

The threat emails had specifically warned of plans to blow up the Amritsar International Airport, triggering high alert in the region. Authorities had earlier conducted mock drills, tightened airport checks, and boosted patrolling around sensitive religious and public places.

Opposition leaders had slammed the government for its “slow and reactive approach”, demanding swift action and increased transparency. Mann’s visit today appears to be a response to such criticism, as he emphasized that the state government is treating the threats with the utmost seriousness.

As the investigation continues, officials have urged the public to remain calm and report any suspicious activity. Meanwhile, daily routines at both the Golden Temple and the airport have resumed under watchful eyes, with thousands of devotees continuing to visit the shrine.
