Chandigarh, September 17: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday launched Mission Chardi Kala, a global fundraising campaign to support the rehabilitation of victims of the devastating 2025 floods in Punjab.
In a video address, Mann described the disaster as “the most horrifying tragedy in Punjab’s history.” He said the floods submerged 2,300 villages, affected more than two million people, destroyed five lakh acres of crops, damaged 3,200 schools, 19 colleges, and 1,400 health facilities, and washed away 8,500 km of roads and 2,500 bridges. At least 56 lives were lost, while over seven lakh people were left homeless. The initial estimated loss is pegged at ₹13,800 crore.
The Chief Minister praised the spirit of Punjabis, noting how youth risked their lives for rescue, and how gurdwaras and temples sheltered and fed those in need. “Punjab has always stood tall in crises, and this time too, we will rebuild with strength and courage,” he said.
Explaining the mission’s name, Mann said Chardi Kala reflects resilience — “strength even in sorrow, hope even in darkness.” He appealed to Punjabis worldwide, Indian citizens, industrialists, artists, and charitable trusts to contribute generously. Donations can be made at www.rangla.punjab.gov.in. He assured that every rupee will be used transparently for rehabilitation.
Mann said a special war room has been set up in his office, which he will personally monitor daily. He also held a video conference with Deputy Commissioners, directing them to visit relief camps and ensure no inconvenience to flood-affected people.
Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, and senior officials joined the Chief Minister during the launch.
