Punjab, Chandigarh Reel Under Blistering Heat; Rain Likely to Ease Conditions Soon

Post-Monsoon Heatwave Grips Punjab: Temperatures Climb, Dry Spell Continues

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Large parts of Punjab and Chandigarh continue to battle an intense heatwave, with temperatures climbing sharply and remaining well above seasonal norms. The extreme weather has disrupted daily life, with both daytime heat and unusually warm nights adding to public discomfort.

Among the worst-affected areas, Bathinda and Faridkot recorded the highest temperatures at 44.3°C, while Chandigarh registered around 41°C. Several other cities, including Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Patiala, also reported readings above 40°C.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, warning of continued heatwave conditions in multiple districts. Hot winds during the day and elevated night temperatures—ranging between 22°C and 26°C—are making conditions particularly harsh, offering little relief even after sunset.

Districts such as Moga, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Sangrur are expected to face the brunt of the heat in the coming days. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, avoid direct sun exposure, and follow health advisories to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Despite the ongoing heatwave, weather experts have indicated a possible change in conditions towards the end of the month. A developing western disturbance is expected to bring light rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across parts of the state between April 26 and April 30.

Initial showers are likely in southern districts before gradually spreading to northern regions. By April 28, many areas across Punjab could witness cloud cover and rain, which may help bring down temperatures and offer some respite from the prolonged heat spell.

Until then, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as residents cope with one of the most intense heat periods of the season.
