National Times Bureau :- The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday refused to intervene immediately in the ongoing flood situation affecting parts of Punjab. The court observed that the state government and its concerned departments are already taking measures to control the situation and provide relief to the affected population.
The petition seeking urgent directions for flood management and preventive steps was heard by the bench, which stated that the matter requires detailed consideration and cannot be rushed without proper reports and on-ground assessments. The court asked the petitioners to present concrete evidence and data before any further directions could be issued.
Officials from the Punjab government informed the court that relief operations are already underway, with rescue teams deployed in the worst-hit areas. They added that the administration is continuously monitoring river levels and dam discharges to avoid any further damage.
The High Court, while acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, emphasized that immediate judicial interference without adequate groundwork may disrupt ongoing efforts and coordination between state authorities. The bench clarified that it will continue to monitor the matter and will take it up for further hearing after receiving detailed status reports from the concerned departments.
The floods, caused by heavy rainfall in the upper regions and subsequent high inflow into key reservoirs, have severely affected several districts in Punjab. Thousands of residents have been evacuated to safer locations, and emergency teams remain on high alert to handle any potential breach in embankments or overflow from major rivers.
This decision of the High Court has drawn mixed reactions, with some social activists urging quicker intervention, while officials maintain that the situation is under control and that judicial patience will allow for more effective planning and execution of relief measures.
