Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): On the occasion of Canada Day, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a stirring address to Canadians, reflecting on the nation’s 158-year journey since Confederation and setting out a bold vision for its future amid global uncertainty.
“Canada Day is a time to remember the gamble a few provinces took on unity,” Carney said. “They believed they’d be stronger together than they ever could be apart — and they were right.”
In his statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that Canada’s history did not begin in 1867, acknowledging the enduring presence and deep contributions of Indigenous Peoples. “Our country’s next chapter will be written together in true partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis,” he said.
Carney invoked pivotal moments in Canadian history — from the Battle of Vimy Ridge to the generosity shown in Gander after 9/11 — as examples of the country’s enduring character and ability to step up in times of need. “Now, we face another such moment,” he added, referencing a shifting global landscape marked by geopolitical instability, economic turbulence, and threats to democracy.
“In a more divided and dangerous world, Canadians are uniting,” he affirmed, laying out his government’s plans to revitalize the nation’s economy and defense. Among his priorities: building a unified Canadian economy through nationwide infrastructure, embracing homegrown technology and energy, and strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces.
“Canadian leadership is defined not only by the strength of our values, but also by the value of our strength,” Carney noted.
The Prime Minister concluded with a powerful expression of national pride: “This is the greatest nation on earth. Our destiny is to make it greater still – not by what we say, but by what we do. Happy Canada Day.”
As Canadians from coast to coast to coast celebrated with fireworks, parades, and community gatherings, Carney’s address served as both a tribute to the country’s past and a call to action for its future.
