DAVOS, Switzerland ( National Times Bureau): In a sharp rebuke to the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada will not be intimidated by threats of tariffs aimed at countries resisting U.S. attempts to influence Greenland. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Carney called such measures “reckless and counter productive”, warning they could fracture international trade and undermine global alliances.
He emphasized that Canada stands firmly with Greenland and Denmark, defending their sovereign right to decide their own future, while reaffirming Ottawa’s absolute commitment to NATO’s Article 5, the cornerstone of collective defence.
“These tactics threaten not just economies, but the very foundations of global cooperation,” Carney said. “Canada will not bow to pressure, and our alliances remain unshaken.”
Analysts say Carney’s statement signals a bold, unflinching stance by Ottawa amid rising tensions over U.S. ambitions in Greenland, marking a rare moment of direct confrontation between two longtime allies.
