KUALA LUMPUR ( National Times): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in South Korea.
This meeting marks the first direct engagement between Canadian and Chinese leaders in several years, signaling a possible thaw in bilateral relations that have been tense amid ongoing trade and diplomatic disputes.
Relations between the two nations have soured in recent years after China imposed damaging tariffs on Canadian canola, seafood, and other agricultural products, retaliating against Canada’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and batteries.
Premiers and business leaders across Canada have been urging Prime Minister Carney to open dialogue with China in hopes of easing the current trade impasse and strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations.
Carney is currently on his first trip to Asia as prime minister, aiming to expand trade ties and secure new international partnerships. The discussions with President Xi are expected to focus on trade, investment, and regional stability, with both sides expressing cautious optimism about rebuilding mutual trust.
