Prime Minister Carney Meets Premiers to Boost Major Projects and Remove Barriers

Huntsville, Ontario (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney convened with provincial and territorial premiers today in Huntsville, Ontario, to advance key national priorities, including the removal of internal barriers, the development of major infrastructure projects, and the addressing of urgent challenges such as wildfires and trade issues.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Carney updated premiers on ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to securing the best possible deal for Canadians. He noted that all First Ministers remain unified in their approach to the negotiations. The Prime Minister also highlighted recent steps taken by the federal government to restrict and reduce foreign steel imports, protect Canadian steelworkers, strengthen domestic production, and ensure Canadian steel is prioritized in government procurement.

A major point of discussion was the need to accelerate the development of large-scale infrastructure and energy projects nationwide. Prime Minister Carney announced that the Major Federal Projects Office and the Indigenous Advisory Council will both be operational by Labour Day. These bodies will serve as central points of contact for governments, private proponents, and communities to bring forward proposals. The federal government is aiming to ensure that all major projects are undertaken in full partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, underscoring a commitment to reconciliation and inclusive growth.

Wildfires also featured prominently in the discussions, given their widespread impact across Canada this summer. The Prime Minister assured the premiers of the federal government’s readiness to mobilize additional resources to protect Canadians and support firefighting efforts where needed.

As the country faces critical economic and environmental challenges, today’s meeting marks a key step in coordinating national and regional efforts to strengthen Canada’s resilience and prosperity.
