Prime Minister Mark Carney Marks Louis Riel Day, Highlights Enduring Métis Legacy

PM Mark Carney announces first projects to be reviewed by the new Major Projects Office

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement Monday commemorating Louis Riel Day, paying tribute to the Métis leader whose influence continues to shape the country more than a century after his death.

Carney described Riel as “a foundational figure” in both Manitoba’s creation and Canada’s early development, noting that 140 years ago Riel played a key role in bringing a young and fragmented nation together. As head of the Provisional Government of Assiniboia, Riel promoted a vision of a province built on cultural respect and broad inclusion, the prime minister said.

Carney emphasized that Riel’s response to injustice — particularly his fight to protect Métis rights — helped lay the groundwork for modern conversations about fairness and national unity. “He believed a strong Canada must be inclusive,” the prime minister noted, adding that Riel’s principles remain relevant to the country’s political and social landscape.

The statement also highlighted how the federal government now recognises the significant contributions of the Métis people to Canada’s development. Carney said Riel’s leadership and the Métis community’s resilience have become “defining elements” of the nation’s story.

As part of the commemoration, Carney reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Métis communities and advancing their priorities. Building that future together, he said, is the most meaningful way to honour Riel’s legacy.

Louis Riel Day is observed annually in Manitoba, where Riel is widely regarded as the province’s founder and a symbol of Métis identity and cultural pride.
