Ottawa (Rajeev sharma): In a diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and addressing escalating tensions in the Middle East, Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, on Monday, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
During their conversation, the two leaders highlighted the strong economic and cultural relationship between Canada and Egypt, and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of trade, investment, and commerce.
The discussion also focused on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza. Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s firm stance, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas. He stressed that Hamas should play no future role in Gaza’s governance, echoing Canada’s consistent position on the group’s involvement in the conflict.
Carney also emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to be delivered to civilians affected by the violence in Gaza and reaffirmed Canada’s support for a two-state solution, emphasizing peaceful coexistence as the only path forward for Israelis and Palestinians.
The call comes amid growing international pressure to stabilize the situation in the region. Egypt has been a key mediator in ceasefire negotiations, and Canada continues to work closely with international partners to promote peace and security.
Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact, signaling ongoing diplomatic collaboration on regional stability and bilateral priorities.
